Panicum virgatum – Shenandoah

This award-winning native switchgrass begins the season with upright, narrow bluish‑green foliage that develops rich burgundy‑red tips by early summer, deepening into a full red-purple canopy by fall. Tall, airy reddish-pink flower panicles emerge in mid-summer, floating above the foliage like a delicate cloud and aging to tan seedheads that persist well into winter. Typically forming a compact columnar clump about 90–120 cm (3–4 ft) tall (extending to ~150 cm with flowers) and a similar spread, 'Shenandoah' retains a stiff, architectural form across seasons. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, this drought- and deer-resistant cultivar thrives in full sun and moist soil and is excellent for naturalistic planting, prairies, rain gardens, and winter wildlife interest.
