Papaver orientale
Oriental Poppy Red brings dramatic colour to perennial gardens with large, scarlet-red, crepe-paper-like blooms accented by contrasting dark centres. The showy, bowl-shaped flowers rise above clumps of hairy, deeply divided green foliage and typically bloom from late spring into early summer. These hardy perennials perform best in full sun and well-drained soil, developing into substantial clumps approximately 2–4 ft tall and 1–2 ft wide. Deer resistance and pollinator appeal make Oriental Poppies an excellent choice for sunny borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds. Thriving in full sun, Oriental Poppies prefer well-drained soil and are heat and drought tolerant, making them ideal for sunnier, drier garden zones. They are hardy across Zones 3–9. Note: they are toxic to pets and humans, and their deep taproots make transplanting difficult—so choose your planting spot wisely.
