Athyrium niponicum - Red Beauty

A striking Japanese painted fern, Athyrium niponicum ‘Red Beauty’ features vibrant fronds of silvery-green highlighted by deep burgundy-red stems and midribs, creating a delicate and colorful tapestry in shaded gardens. It forms graceful, triangular clumps approximately 12–18 in (30–45 cm) tall and wide, slowly naturalizing via rhizomes into woodland borders or containers. Thriving in bright shade to full shade with consistently moist, humus-rich soil, it tolerates average garden conditions while resisting deer and rabbits. Low-maintenance and elegant, it maintains its lustrous foliage from spring through fall, adding year‑round interest with minimal care.
