Alcea rosea - Double Purple
Alcea rosea ‘Chater’s Double Purple’ is a majestic biennial (or short-lived perennial) known for its lush, double purple blooms that resemble giant pom-poms, perfect for creating dramatic height and color in the back of sunny borders. With satiny, crepe-textured petals in a rich rosy-purple hue, these blooms rise on tall, sturdy stems reaching about 150–210 cm (5–7 ft), offering strong visual impact and excellent cut-flower appeal. Thriving in USDA zones 2–9, they attract hummingbirds and butterflies from midsummer into late summer. While resilient and low-maintenance, they can be susceptible to rust in humid climates—spacing and proper watering help. ‘Chater’s Double Purple’ readily self-seeds, ensuring vibrant color returns each season.
