Papaver orientale

A majestic herbaceous perennial, Papaver orientale, commonly known as the Oriental Poppy, is celebrated for its bold, crepe-paper blooms—frequently in striking shades of red, orange, pink, or white, often with a dark blotch at the petal base. These flamboyant blossoms, spanning up to 6 inches across, perch atop sturdy stems that rise 2–4 feet tall. The foliage forms a lively mound of hairy, finely dissected, gray-green leaves in spring, which die back post-bloom to survive dry summer conditions—creating space for companion plants to fill. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Oriental Poppies prefer well-drained soil and are heat and drought tolerant, making them ideal for sunnier, drier garden zones. They are hardy across Zones 3–8. These poppies are low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and attract bees and butterflies, bringing both elegance and wildlife value to the garden. Note: they are toxic to pets and humans, and their deep taproots make transplanting difficult—so choose your planting spot wisely
